As SABIA takes on new leadership under the appointment of new directors, the association aims to advocate for biogas and it's integral role in the renewable energy sector. With this we usher in the closure of the UNIDO and SABIA partnership and offer our thanks to UNIDO as a key role player in the development and implementation of several projects within the biogas sector. Through this transition SABIA aims to refine the organisation's growth and strategic direction, thereby ensuring that SABIA and the biogas industry grows, not only in South Africa, but the Southern African region.
By 2030, SABIA aims to support the unlocking of the renewable energy capacity of the biogas industry to its fullest potential and ensure that its members capitalise on local market opportunities. SABIA aims to foster strong collaborative partnerships that will drive socio-economic developments in the sector. SABIA, along with its partners and key stakeholders will collectively drive the creation of biogas market opportunities for the benefit of its members. It is imperative that the potential of the biogas sector be seen as a strong contributor to the future of sustainable energy.
Some of the main goals of SABIA at present are to:
- Hold government accountable for meeting NDC pledges/targets.
- Updating of the SABIA business plan which include :
- Stakeholder engagement with strategic partners to allow SABIA the financial flexibility to employ full time staff.
- Implementation of working groups to increase member participation with direct involvement in the shaping of the biogas sector.
- Working towards SABIA industry training to increase knowledge transfer to the biogas industry.
- Roundtable workshop in October 2022 with key stakeholders (government, financial institutions, tertiary institutions etc.) in efforts to lobby and enhance the education of the role of the biogas sector in the transition towards sustainable energy.
The updated SABIA bisiness plan is the last of the UNIDO projects in support of SABIA to ensure the association can continue to function sustainably without having to rely solely on volunteer assistance. Lastly SABIA would like to thank its outgoing board directors Eddie Cooke, Jason Gifford and Rob Cloete for their contributions to the association and input in driving the biogas industry in South Africa.
