GreenCape, in collaboration with the City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Department, is hosting a hybrid (in-person and virtual) plenary event to update Cape Town’s hospitality, food manufacturing and food processing industries on their requirements to submit organic waste plans to the City of Cape Town, but to also provide guidance on how to develop these organic waste plans, and to present the various solutions available in Cape Town.

Event Style:     Plenary session

Date:                Wednesday, 21 September 2022

Time:               10h00 – 12h00

Location:         In person at GreenCape [Click] and online [Click]

Audience:        Hospitality, food manufacturers and food processors

In 2018, the Western Cape Government instructed [Click] all landfills to reduce the landfilling of organic waste, which includes food related waste, to 50% by 2022, and then 100% by 2027.

In effect, banning the landfilling of organic waste. The reasoning being to reduce the amount of landfilling of highly recyclable waste and to reduce methane production (a key greenhouse gas) that is produced in landfills through disposal of organic waste.

One of the policy levers the City of Cape Town have implemented is to require that all Cape Town based organic waste generators (notably hospitality, food manufacturers and food processors) to submit a plan on how they intend to ensure their organic waste does not end up in landfill.

The notice [Click] requires that these organic waste generators have by 31 October 2022 to submit an organic waste plan to the City of Cape Town. To make this process easier, GreenCape and the City of Cape Town, will be hosting a plenary session to guide organic waste generating companies through these requirements, and to present what information should be included in these organic waste plans, and lastly, to provide information on the wide range of organic waste solutions available in Cape Town.

The next step will be for waste generators use this information to develop their own organic waste plan and subsequently submit the plan to the City of Cape Town by 31 October 2022.
